Description of the silver coin Year of the Dragon 2024 Lilac coin in a card

The fifth issue in the Australian Lunar III series, dedicated to the Year of the Dragon in 2024. The coin, minted from pure silver, depicts a colorful dragon and a burning pearl, a symbol of wisdom. The dragon, one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, symbolizes wisdom, enlightenment, and kindness, and has been associated with the emperor in Chinese culture for thousands of years. People born in the years of the Dragon, such as 2024, 2012, 2000, and 1988, are considered ambitious, charismatic, and successful. The coin, which refers to this symbolism, is presented on an aesthetically designed presentation card, which includes a certificate of authenticity and a fold-out display stand. Its mintage is strictly limited to only 5,000 pieces.

Appearance of the 2024 Year of the Dragon silver coin Lilac coin in a card

The coin is minted in silver and coated with a distinctive lilac color, which gives it a unique character. The reverse features a dynamic Chinese dragon winding around a burning pearl – a symbol of wisdom and spiritual energy. In the background, subtle details highlight the Asian tradition theme, and the whole is complemented by the Chinese character for "dragon," the inscription DRAGON 2024, and a special mark from The Perth Mint commemorating its 125th anniversary. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark, along with the dates of her reign: 1952–2022. The coin is enclosed in a protective blister pack, which serves as an elegant display case.

Historical overview

The coin was issued by the renowned Perth Mint as part of the Lunar III series, celebrating the Chinese lunar calendar. The tradition of minting coins inspired by the Chinese zodiac dates back to the late 20th century, when the mint began issuing its first series of lunar coins in 1996. Since then, subsequent editions have been highly acclaimed by both collectors and investors. The dragon, which is the subject of the coin, occupies a special place in Chinese culture, symbolizing strength, wisdom, and good fortune. The Year of the Dragon, which falls in 2024, is considered a time of powerful energy and prosperity.

The coin refers not only to Chinese tradition, but also to the rich history of The Perth Mint, which celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2024. Founded in 1899 as a branch of the Royal Mint in London, over the years it has become one of the most respected producers of precious metals in the world. Thanks to a combination of master craftsmanship and modern technology, the mint regularly issues limited edition collector's items, many of which achieve high values on the numismatic market.
