Description of the silver coin Silesian Uprising

This silver coin with a fineness of 0.925 was issued to commemorate key events in Polish history, namely the Silesian Uprisings. Its extremely interesting design, both on the reverse and the obverse, makes this coin memorable for a long time.

Appearance of the silver coin Silesian Uprising

The reverse side of the coin features images of three Silesian insurgents, placed within the outline of a fragment of a map of Silesia. Three dates important to these events are shown there – 1919, 1920, and 1921 – as well as the inscription POWSTANIA ŚLĄSKIE (Silesian Uprisings). The obverse shows a fragment of a map of Silesia in accordance with the territorial demands of the time, against the backdrop of the Silesian landscape. We can also see the Polish coat of arms, the mint mark and the year of issue – 2011.

Historical overview

The Silesian Uprisings were a series of armed conflicts that took place in Upper Silesia after the end of World War I, mainly between 1919 and 1921. These clashes were the Silesian population's response to Germany's attempts to annex the region. The population, focusing mainly on defending their national and territorial identity, fought against the German authorities and military units. During these events, the inhabitants of Upper Silesia, regardless of their nationality, fought for either belonging to Poland or remaining within the borders of Germany. The fighting was cruel and bloody, and the outcome was crucial for the future of the region. Despite the diversity of the community living in Upper Silesia, people united in their pursuit of independence and protection of their culture. Ultimately, the division of the region between Poland and Germany was confirmed by the Treaty of Versailles, and the area was subjected to a plebiscite. The Silesian Uprisings are an important part of Polish history, symbolizing the struggle for freedom and national identity.
