Product description
This silver coin is a commemorative coin created to commemorate a dramatic and groundbreaking event in Polish history – the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the heroism of its participants, and the tragic fate of its victims. The issue is a testament to the memory of the people and events that were key to the collective consciousness and history of the 20th century in Poland. The coin is intended for collectors interested in history, numismatics commemorating important national moments, as well as for people who value items with deep symbolic meaning – both as part of a collection and as a source of reflection on the past.
Appearance of the coin
The coin commemorating the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising evokes a strong sense of solemnity and significance—the graphic style and symbolism alone clearly communicate the importance of this anniversary.
On the reverse side, attention is drawn to a brick wall, a symbol of the restrictions, repression, and tragedy experienced by the inhabitants of the ghetto. Against the backdrop of the wall, a tree with leaves growing above the wall is visible, which may symbolize hope and remembrance of the victims. Next to it, at the edge of the wall, there is a Star of David – a universal symbol of Jewish identity and a reference to the nation that suffered greatly in the ghetto. At the bottom, the circumstances of the issue are written in clear font, clearly indicating its theme.
The obverse of the coin features the national emblem, placed centrally against a background of fragments of a brick wall, symbolically linking Polish statehood with the memory of the events of the uprising. The denomination appears below the eagle, and the name of the issuing country and the year of issue are located in the rim.
Historical overview
The history of this coin refers to the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising – one of the most tragic and symbolic events of World War II. The uprising, which began in April 1943, was the first armed rebellion of the urban population against German occupation in Europe and an expression of the desperate struggle for dignity and the right to freedom in the face of the planned extermination of Warsaw's Jewish community.
A small number of poorly armed fighters from the Jewish Combat Organization and the Jewish Military Union resisted the much more powerful German forces, aware that the fight would not bring military victory, but would become an act of resistance against extermination.
Poles associated with the resistance movement also participated in the uprising, providing combat and logistical support through the Home Army and other underground organizations. This assistance included supplying weapons and ammunition, conducting cover operations, and organizing attempts to break through to the fighting ghetto and evacuate the few survivors. Although the possibilities for such assistance were limited by the superiority of the occupier and the realities of the underground, the cooperation between Polish and Jewish formations remains a testament to solidarity and joint resistance to Nazi terror.
The National Bank of Poland introduced this coin into circulation in 2008 as part of a broader mission to preserve national memory and promote historical education. The issue was intended to preserve awareness of the fate of the Warsaw Ghetto and to pay tribute to its inhabitants – both the fallen insurgents and the thousands of defenseless victims who died during the pacification of the district. The coin was created to remind future generations of the need to preserve memory, condemn totalitarianism and racial hatred, and build a culture of dialogue and respect for human dignity. It is a symbolic monument to history engraved in metal – a lasting sign of reflection on one of the darkest chapters in 20th-century history.
