Historical overview
The silver coin "90th Anniversary of the Greater Poland Uprising" was issued in 2008 to commemorate one of the most important and effective Polish independence uprisings. The Greater Poland Uprising broke out on December 27, 1918, in Poznań, during a period of general chaos following the end of World War I. It was the response of the Polish population of the region to Germany's attempts to maintain power and restrict the national rights of Poles.
Thanks to efficient organization, high determination of the population, and support from underground structures and local military units, the insurgents quickly gained control over most of Greater Poland, which in the following months led to international recognition of their victory.
The successful battles directly contributed to the region's inclusion in the reborn Republic of Poland, which was of great territorial, economic, and political significance for the young state. To this day, the uprising remains a unique example of the Poles' victorious armed struggle for independence, conducted in a disciplined and effective manner.
The National Bank of Poland decided to issue a commemorative coin to preserve the memory of this event and pay tribute to the participants of the uprising and the inhabitants of Greater Poland, whose commitment was crucial for the fate of the region. The coin was created as part of a broader program of issuing historical coins, which aims to popularize knowledge about important moments in Polish history and strengthen national identity through the art of medal making.
The coin therefore serves not only as a collector's item, but also as a symbolic testimony to the victorious struggle for freedom and unity of the country.
The coin was issued by the National Bank of Poland (NBP), which is responsible for issuing currency in Poland. The NBP regularly puts into circulation both circulation coins and collector and commemorative coins commemorating important events, anniversaries, and historical figures.
