Historical overview
Joseph Conrad, or Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, is a world-renowned writer and journalist of Polish descent. Konrad Korzeniowski was born in 1857 into a noble Polish family from Berdyczów in Ukraine. Konrad's father was an active independence activist who supported the November Uprising, which resulted in the family's land being confiscated and his father being exiled to Russia.
Financed by his uncle, at the age of 17 Korzeniowski traveled to Marseille, where he enlisted in the French merchant navy. As an apprentice and steward, he visited Martinique, the Caribbean, and South America. Soon, due to financial problems, Korzeniowski emigrated to Great Britain, where he also joined the merchant navy and visited Australia. At the same time, he passed the exam to become a second officer, then a first officer and captain. Thanks to passing the exam, he obtained British citizenship.
Between 1889 and 1891, he stayed in the depths of Africa, working as a captain for a Belgian company trading with the upper Congo. Unfortunately, the venture was not very successful, so after two years Korzeniowski resigned. He continued his career for another three years, after which he devoted himself to writing.
Korzeniowski's travels and worldly experience inspired most of his works and publications. Unfortunately, he did not write in Polish. Conrad wrote his greatest works, such as Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim, which are part of the school curriculum, in English.
The coin was issued by the National Bank of Poland (NBP), which is responsible for issuing currency in Poland. The NBP regularly puts into circulation both circulation coins and collector and commemorative coins commemorating important events, anniversaries, and historical figures.
