A 200 złoty gold coin issued in 2005 by the National Bank of Poland to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Mikołaj Rej. It is a unique collector’s edition in proof finish. Proof coins are distinguished by their perfectly mirror-like surface, on both the obverse and reverse. Only 3,600 pieces were minted in this series. This coin is not only a tribute to one of the most important figures in Polish literature, but also a valuable collector’s item that can serve as a sound investment for the future. The reverse side features a bust of Mikołaj Rej against the backdrop of a building. It also includes information about the writer’s life and the 500th anniversary of his birth being celebrated. Rej’s portrait is the focal point of the reverse side, rendered with great precision, and the entire design is harmoniously composed to honor his memory and his work.
In the center of the obverse, a goose feather is positioned diagonally, alluding to the figure’s literary work. On the left is an image of an eagle, modeled after the coat of arms of the Republic of Poland, along with the year of issue and denomination. At the bottom is a facsimile of Mikołaj Rej’s signature. The coin is struck with the utmost precision, with attention to the finest details. The natural color of gold, accented by a matte finish, perfectly highlights the design’s details. The coin has a mirror-like proof finish, giving it an elegant and exclusive appearance.
Mikołaj Rej, born on February 4, 1505, in Żurawno, is regarded as one of the founding fathers of Polish literature. He was a Renaissance writer, poet, translator, and thinker who, for the first time in the history of Polish literature, wrote exclusively in Polish, thereby contributing to the development and popularization of the Polish language.
The 200-złoty gold coin was minted to mark the 500th anniversary of Mikołaj Rej’s birth, in recognition of his contribution to Polish culture and literature. Commemorative issues released by the National Bank of Poland aim to promote the memory of important historical figures and events.
