Historical overview
Jaja Fabergé, nazywane carskimi, powstały w pracowni nadwornego jubilera cara Aleksandra III. Każde z nich zostało wykonane na zamówienie władcy. Pierwsze dzieło powstało w 1885 roku i stanowiło prezent wielkanocny dla żony cara, Marii Fiodorowny Romanowej. Co roku Peter Carl Fabergé dostawał zamówienie na wykonanie kolejnego jajka, wykorzystując do jego stworzenia złoto, masę perłową, srebro, emalię, szlachetne kamienie i kość słoniową. Co ciekawe, każde z jajek kryło w sobie niespodziankę. Po śmierci Aleksandra III tradycję zamawiania jajek kontynuował jego syn Mikołaj II.
Najdroższym jajkiem świata, jak również najwyżej wycenianym dziełem sztuki złotniczej, uznano jajo koronacyjne Fabergé, wykonane w 1897 roku właśnie dla cara Mikołaja II, który podarował je w prezencie swojej świeżo poślubionej żonie, carycy Aleksandrze Fiodorownej. Jego wygląd i styl nawiązują do koronacji cesarskiej Mikołaja II, która odbyła się w maju 1896 roku.
