Description of the 20 CAD Silver Coin Snowflake with Crystal 2023
The Royal Canadian Mint has introduced a new series of coins featuring the popular snowflake motif. These coins were last seen in the 2018 Snowflake collection.
This time, it is the first hexagonal silver coin produced by the Mint. Its shape perfectly matches the snowflake engraved on the reverse. The coin is made of 1 ounce of 999 purity silver. The small mintage of 8,500 pieces makes it a real treat for collectors around the world. The coin is packaged in a new, innovative case, which also contains a certificate of authenticity.
Appearance of the 20 CAD Silver Coin Snowflake with Crystal 2023
The reverse side of the coin depicts a snow crystal. It sparkles in the light, an effect similar to that of snowflakes sparkling in the sunlight. Upon closer inspection, it can be seen that each of the fern-like "branches" is slightly different, reflecting the natural variations in shape found in nature. The transparent crystal in the center adds a touch of winter sparkle and luxury to the overall composition.
The obverse features an image of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The design also includes a special marking with four pearls symbolizing the four images of the Queen that have adorned Canadian coins throughout her reign, as well as the dates of her reign.
Historical overview
The shape of a snowflake is largely determined by atmospheric conditions, particularly temperature and humidity. The arms of snow crystals appear symmetrical because they form under similar environmental conditions. However, slight changes in temperature and humidity cause each arm to be slightly different, which helps explain why no two snowflakes are exactly alike.
Manufacturer
As Canada's independence from Great Britain grew, so did the need to mint its own coins. That is why the Royal Canadian Mint was established in 1908 and has since become one of the most important mints in the world. However, to this day, all coins from the Royal Canadian Mint bear the portrait of the reigning British monarch.
The shares of the Mint are held in trust for the Crown of Canada.
The Mint produces all Canadian circulation coins and designs and manufactures collector coins made of precious metals—gold, silver, palladium, and platinum bullion coins, medals, medallions, and tokens. It also offers gold and silver refining services.
Today, the Royal Canadian Mint sets the standard in minting technology and numismatic design, reflecting its position and reputation.
