Product description

A 200 zł collector’s coin was issued by the National Bank of Poland on June 3, 2009, to mark the 20th anniversary of Poland’s first partially free parliamentary elections. This event was a watershed moment in the country’s history, symbolizing the beginning of political transformation and the path to democracy and freedom. The coin was designed by Urszula Walerzak. The issuance of this coin is part of the series “Poland’s Road to Freedom,” which commemorates key moments in Poland’s recent history. The coin is not only a valuable collector’s item but also an important historical symbol, reminding us of the public’s determination in the pursuit of freedom and of the role that the 1989 elections played in shaping modern Poland.

Appearance of the coin

This coin commemorates a landmark event in Polish history: the elections of June 4, 1989, which marked the beginning of the country’s transition to democracy. The reverse of the coin depicts a dynamic historical scene—Lech Wałęsa addressing the crowd gathered in front of the parliament building with his hand raised in a victory gesture (the V sign), symbolizing the triumph of democracy. Above is the date 12.09.1989, the day the first government elected in partially free elections was formed. Along the edge is the inscription FIRST GOVERNMENT OF THE GREAT TRANSITION, which clearly emphasizes the historical significance of this moment for the development of democracy in Poland. The obverse of the coin depicts a symbolic division of space—on the left are port cranes, referencing the shipbuilding industry and the importance of the working-class community in social transformation. On the right is a mine hoist tower, which serves as a reference to the role of miners and trade unions in the struggle for freedom. Centrally placed are the emblem of the Republic of Poland, the denomination, and the date of issue.

Historical overview

The gold coin was issued by the National Bank of Poland to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Poland’s first partially free parliamentary elections. This event marked a turning point in the country’s history, symbolizing the beginning of political transformation and the path toward democracy and freedom.

It was published as part of the series *Poland’s Road to Freedom*, which commemorates key moments in Poland’s recent history, such as the founding of the Solidarity trade union, the events of June 1976, and those of March 1968. This series aims to remind us of the Polish people’s quest for freedom and democracy, as well as the importance of dialogue and compromise in the process of socio-political transformation. The coin is not only a valuable collector’s item but also an important historical symbol, reminding us of the public’s determination in the pursuit of freedom and the role that the 1989 elections played in shaping modern Poland.
