Investing in silver and gold is becoming increasingly popular in Poland. Choosing precious metals is a way to effectively diversify your investment portfolio and protect your capital in times of inflation. However, caution should be exercised when investing in gold bars and bullion coins! First and foremost, it is necessary to purchase precious metals from reliable sources such as our Mennica Skarbowa, which offers LBMA-accredited investment products. This guarantees the purchase of authentic precious metal. But are there ways to verify its authenticity? Let's take silver as an example!
How can you check the authenticity of silver using home methods?
The answer to this question is not clear-cut. A person with knowledge of metallurgy and precious metals is able to detect a fake. Otherwise, it is difficult to talk about "reliable" methods that allow the authenticity of silver bars or silver bullion coins. For this reason, among others, it is recommended to always buy silver and gold from reliable sources: mints accredited by the LBMA and providing buyers with the relevant documentation. Buying precious metals from dealers, individuals, or pawn shops may turn out to be a waste of money, which, unfortunately, is difficult to recover from dishonest sellers.
Checking the authenticity of silver at home – learn two simple methods!
There are two methods for checking the authenticity of silver at home. However, it is important to note that these methods do not provide 100% certainty that a given product is made of high-purity silver. Such an analysis can be performed by specialists, including appropriate laboratories that test the physicochemical properties of precious metals.
Visual and acoustic evaluation of silver
This method is based on verifying the color of silver bars or bullion coins. They should have a metallic gray hue and the ability to reflect light, especially after polishing. However, it is important to note that the surface of silver is neither too shiny nor too matte. Many people confuse it with white gold or stainless steel, for example. It is also worth mentioning the sound assessment – when you strike a silver coin or bar with a metal object, you will hear a resonant, drawn-out sound. You can record it and analyze it in a special application! It will compare the sound obtained with the real sound made by silver.
Testing the authenticity of silver using a magnet
Another way to test the authenticity of silver at home is to use magnesium. Silver is classified as diamagnetic, which means that it does not react to magnetic fields. Therefore, if the silver item being tested sticks to a large magnet, you can be sure that it is not made of precious metal or contains only small amounts of it (e.g., low-grade silver). Keep in mind that this type of test can produce false results.
Silver and electrical conductivity testing
A unique property of silver is its thermal conductivity, which is the best among precious metals and can be used to test the authenticity of the metal. There are many ways to use this property. One of them is simply to place an ice cube on silver, e.g., a silver bar. Measure the melting time and compare it with the melting time of ice in contact with another metal. Of course, this is another method that only appears to tell us whether our product is actually investment silver of considerable value.
Advanced methods for assessing the authenticity of silver
Despite the lack of specialized and reliable methods for testing the authenticity of silver at home, there are more or less advanced techniques used by specialists. We present methods that are used by experienced individuals, as well as by metallurgy enthusiasts.
Checking silver using a chemical method
Chromic acid can be used to check the authenticity of silver. This is a solution of chromic acid that reacts with silver. The result is silver chromate with a characteristic red color. How do you perform this test? Simply scratch the surface of a silver bar or silver bullion coin gently, then drip chromic acid onto it. A color change on the scratch will indicate that the metal is authentic. Unfortunately, it will be difficult to determine its fineness.
XRF spectrometer
The safest and most reliable method of verifying the authenticity of gold bars in particular, but also silver products, is to use an XRF (X-ray fluorescence) spectrometer. This technology allows for accurate examination of the chemical composition of the metals being analyzed without the need to destroy them or perform invasive tests.
Summary: checking the authenticity of silver
If you are concerned about counterfeit silver bars and bullion coins, be sure to purchase them from mints that cooperate with manufacturers affiliated with the LBMA. This organization guarantees that 100% authentic precious metals are placed on the market, accompanied by the appropriate documentation and packaged in special cases, such as CertiPack!
