A cocktail ring is the perfect piece of jewelry for the evening. You can wear it when going out for drinks, to a club party, to dinner at a restaurant, or even as an accessory to a long evening gown. The only thing it doesn't go with is a ball gown. What exactly is a cocktail ring?
A cocktail ring is simply a large, richly decorated ring with a fancy shape, so ostentatious that it is visible to everyone. It is most often adorned with a single, very large stone, diamond or other gemstone. Why cocktail? Because in the 1920s and 1930s, it was worn in the evening, usually at elegant cocktail parties. It is not a ring suitable for a formal reception, and certainly not for a ball. It is too informal for that. A cocktail ring is a symbol of rebellion, of breaking the rules. However, it goes perfectly with a simple, stylish cocktail dress and can be its main decoration. So while wearing a cocktail ring with a ball gown would be a bad idea, wearing it with a cocktail dress or a long evening gown would be a great idea. It is therefore a great accessory for carnival and New Year's Eve outfits, as well as when going for a drink at an elegant cocktail bar, dinner at a restaurant, or a party at a club.
In the 1920s and 1930s, as well as in the 1950s, when cocktail rings became fashionable again, it was popular to wear a ring on a glove. Today, we don't wear gloves unless they are part of a carnival costume or we are going to a ball (to which we don't wear a cocktail ring). Therefore, we wear a cocktail ring on our bare hand.
How to choose a cocktail ring? It should be large, opulent, eye-catching, even a little ostentatious. It should arouse interest and be visible. Usually, a ring with one large stone looks better, although this is not a rule. Because a cocktail ring is very large, we do not compete with it and wear only one on our hand, preferably only on one hand and only on the right (according to tradition).
