When I think of a modern, elegant man, James Bond in a suit immediately comes to mind. The outfit is simple, subdued, without unnecessary accessories. Although a man does not always have to wear a suit to be elegant, one thing remains unchanged – he cannot be overdressed.

Men do not wear decorative jewelry. The only decorative jewelry a man can wear is cufflinks. It's funny, because in the 17th century, men's clothing surpassed women's clothing in terms of the amount of decorations, lace, and expensive stones. With the execution of the French king and the change of power at the end of the 13th century, there was a drastic shift in men's fashion. Men became masculine in today's sense of the word. From then on, a gentleman's attire became minimalist. Hence, regardless of fashion, in business situations and on formal occasions, the only jewelry worn by modern men is:

  • cufflinks – made of silver, gold, metal, wood, or stone – a very elegant element of an outfit and the only decorative element (apart from the tie),
  • A watch—attached to a leather strap (for a suit), a metal bracelet (for everyday wear), or a pocket watch (for formal attire)—should be classy and stylish, but not overly decorative.
  • wedding ring and possibly a family signet ring.

You may not like Daniel Craig as James Bond, but in Tom Ford suits and tuxedos, he is one of the best-dressed Bonds in history. They are perfectly fitted, beautifully tailored, and always in subdued colors. What else accompanies Bond in every film? A gun, a Martini, an Aston Martin DB5 (the latter not in every installment), cufflinks, and a watch. It's hard to imagine a better combination.

And a tie clip? Isn't it also a piece of men's jewelry? Well, no. Tie clips originate from military uniforms and are used by military personnel and security agents. They have also become popular in men's fashion in the United States, but in Europe, wearing them is considered a mistake.

Is that really all a man can wear? In formal situations, yes. In informal situations, especially young men can wear a chain or leather bracelet, for example. In limited quantities. A large amount of gold only suits the image of a rapper. And an earring? An earring has one very significant disadvantage. Even if you take it out, you can see the mark it leaves behind. It is therefore obvious that a man wears it, which can negatively affect his image.

Jewelry should always be color-coordinated (silver with silver, gold with gold) and match other metal elements of the outfit, such as a belt buckle or eyeglass frames (which should also be silver or gold).
