PEARLS – IN A CLASS OF THEIR OWN, AND CHEAPER THAN DIAMONDS

Pearl jewelry is the only jewelry that can be worn anytime, anywhere. Pearls can be worn bothto work and in the evening with a cocktail dress, in the summer during vacations, and even with an elegant evening gown. While diamonds and other sparkling gemstones should only be worn in the evening, pearls are acceptable everywhere—even at work. So it's worth having them.

HOW PEARLS ARE FORMED

Pearls are created by mussels and are made of mother-of-pearl, the same substance as the inside of the shell. They are formed when a foreign body, such as a grain of sand, enters the shell. The poor mussel defends itself against the intruder by depositing successive layers of mother-of-pearl around it. After several years, a pearl is formed. They are created by both saltwater and freshwater mussels. Natural pearls are so rare that most of those used in jewelry today are cultured pearls, which are also a natural product, not an imitation.

SHAPE AND COLOR

Pearls come in all shapes and colors. Not all of them are round and white. The most expensive ones are round, but pearls can also be oval, teardrop-shaped (pear-shaped), grain-shaped, partially convex and partially flat, or completely irregular in shape, known as baroque. They come in a variety of colors, so every woman can find something to suit her taste. There are white, cream, yellow, pink, silver, blue, green, brown, gray, and even black pearls. In addition to their basic color, they can also have a luster in a different shade and color. The rarer the color, the more expensive the pearl. They can also have spots. They are not always perfectly smooth. Smooth ones are obviously the most expensive, but a pearl can also have various irregularities, such as dots and bubbles.

SIZE

Since pearls are a natural product of mussels, their size is subject to limitations that gemstones are not. The mussel must be able to produce a pearl. Pearls used in jewelry range in diameter from approximately 3 mm to approximately 2 cm. Large pearls are much more difficult to cultivate than smaller ones, so they are much rarer and therefore more expensive.

Pearls are classy. They are a beautiful, versatile accessory. Compared to the price of precious stones, they are also relatively inexpensive. They can be worn alone in the form of a necklace or bracelet, or combined with precious stones and gold elements. If you don't like classics, instead of a pearl necklace, choose pearls as an element of a pendant, necklace, or earrings.
